  • Looking back at 2008

    Ashley McMaster, Lead Editor
I have had the pleasure during the course of 2008 to deliver the news that matters most to you and the food and drug law industry. Part I of this FDLI SmartBrief special year-end report rounds up the most important trends, stories and events of the past year. Part II, which will arrive in your inbox Thursday, will provide a glimpse into what you -- the readers of FDLI SmartBrief -- and I think 2009 has in store, as well as an events calendar for the coming year.

This year began with news of President George W. Bush's proposal to increase funds for the FDA, which eventually led to approval of an appropriations bill that included an additional $275 million in funding. Food safety remained a dominant topic this year following major food recalls, and it undoubtedly will be a significant issue to tackle for President-elect Barack Obama's administration. In the second half of 2008, the biotechnology industry's smaller firms faced the tough economy by turning to nonprofits and bigger pharmaceutical companies for funding while others were forced to delay or cancel IPOs.

This year's conferences took FDLI members to the 1st Annual Conference on Nanotechnology Law, Regulation and Policy; to the 51st Annual FDLI & the FDA Conference; and to the 20th Annual Advertising & Promotion Conference, among numerous other seminars, forums and workshops. It has been an exciting and eventful year.

And now, here's what was most important to you in 2008.
