  • Is lying online now a federal crime?
The case of the "MySpace suicide" in which a teenage girl killed herself after being rejected by an online crush -- who turned out to be a classmate's mother posing as teenage boy -- was cause for widespread outrage at the perpetrator of the deadly hoax. That woman, Lori Drew, was found guilty on three misdemeanor counts in federal court and faces a possible three years in prison and $300,000 in fines -- essentially for violating the MySpace terms of service. Now bloggers, social networkers and even marketers have to face up to a new legal reality -- that under fairly ordinary circumstances, it may be illegal to assume a false identity online. But microblog Twitter, which reportedly was in talks to become part of Facebook, is not on MySpace's wish list, DeWolfe said. Reuters (12/2) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  • Croatian Facebook user detained for launching group critical of PM
Twenty-two year old Croatian Niksa Klecak was picked up by police and interrogated after starting a Facebook group critical of prime minister Ivo Sanader. The group, dubbed "I bet I can find 5,000 people who dislike Sanader," featured images of Sanader altered to contain Nazi symbols -- which are illegal under Croatian law. The detention has drawn sharp criticism from Croatia's opposition Social Democrat party and has inspired a host of copycat Facebook groups.
