  • Mueller: Broadband data, video will propel Qwest
With two-thirds of Qwest Communications' customers paying an extra $10 a month for high-speed Internet data services, CEO Ed Mueller said Tuesday that broadband data -- and eventually possibly video -- would act as the core element of the telecom's residential business. Speaking at a media conference, Mueller -- who also said Qwest still had the flexibility to cut costs further -- painted a future where fiber-to-the-node would reach 55% to 65% of its 13 million customers, compared with 1.8 million today and an estimated 4 million by the end of 2009. • Fate of BCE deal coming down to KPMG decision
The auditor KPMG will issue its final ruling Thursday on whether to uphold its Nov. 26 opinion that the entity which would take over Canada's BCE would not be solvent, a confirmation that would kill the deal. The parties could then end up in court to argue over whether the group, led by the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan, owes BCE a $1.2 billion breakup free. • Executive: LTE in Verizon's 2009 plans
In a sign that wireless companies are eager to roll out broadband services based on Long Term Evolution technology, a top Verizon official said Tuesday that the company was gearing up to deploy LTE earlier than analysts were predicting. "We expect that LTE will actually be in service somewhere here in the U.S. probably this time next year," said Dick Lynch, executive vice president and chief technology officer of Verizon Communications. • AT&T: Obama recovery plan should aid unserved areas
President-elect Barack Obama's proposal to pump hundreds of billions of dollars into the country's infrastructure must include outlying and other neglected areas where broadband services have yet to reach, AT&T Operations CEO John Stankey said Tuesday. Speaking at a UBS-sponsored media conference, Stankey said: "It seems to me if you lower the hurdle rates on the cost of capital, you might have an answer to some of that, and I think the policymakers are kind of looking at that as a dynamic." • Playing "What if," Nortel gets bankruptcy advice
Insisting that no filings are imminent, Nortel Networks has pursued legal advice on its best course of action -- including the option of declaring bankruptcy -- if the restructuring plan the company laid out Nov. 10 fails to repair the equipment maker's finances. A Nortel spokesman said the company had enough liquidity to sustain 12 to 18 months of operation under the current conditions, but observers noted that Canada's constitutional crisis had complicated the Toronto-based company's hopes of pursuing government aid. • Sun sees fragmented, specialized cloud business
Sun Microsystems outlined its views Tuesday on competing in the highly contentious cloud-computing field, maintaining that the industry will remain highly fragmented and specialized, but executives stopped short of saying whether Sun will build its own cloud infrastructure. Sun's outlook differed from those offered by other hardware vendors and developers of Web applications that see the Web-based servers as more of a commodity running specialized software.
