- Business spending rises as private sector shows confidence
Economists warned that the recovery could stumble if private investment does not step in as the government's stimulus programs end. Evidence of private-sector support showed up in the third quarter as business spending grew at an annualized rate of 1.1%, after declining six quarters in a row. The spending on business equipment and software marks a sharp reversal from the first quarter, when spending plummeted at a 36.4% annualized rate. USA TODAY
