- Will a federal judge deny an antitrust cable a la carte suit?
On March 10, major cable companies and programmers will ask a federal judge in Los Angeles to reject an antitrust suit that would require pay-TV distributors to allow consumers to buy channels a la carte. In a Dec. 21 court filing, Comcast, on behalf of the cable firms, said the suit was an attempt to alter the antitrust laws. Viacom, representing cable programmers, said antitrust laws did not provide consumers a right to buy channels individually. Multichannel News

- FCC gives green light to Ion Media deal
The FCC has given its stamp of approval to the buyout of Ion Media Networks' TV assets by Citadel Investment Group, which is expected to invest $100 million in the network. - Cable industry gets ready for torrid HDTV growth
One of the hottest areas of growth in the entertainment industry in 2008 will be high-definition programming, according to this article, and the country's dominant cable firms will be rolling out a variety of HD offerings this year. Time Warner Cable, for one, is spending $50 million in North Carolina and South Carolina so it can offer an unlimited number of high-def channels by the middle of 2008.
