  • Obesity linked to thyroid damage in children

Researchers say more study is needed to see if losing weight returns the thyroid to normal. Yahoo!/Reuters (12/3) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
  • Studies: Most cases of child abuse, neglect go unreported
A series of reports in The Lancet show only 1 in 10 child abuse cases are actually confirmed by social service agencies in countries such as the U.S., U.K., Australia and Canada, and that medical providers reported only 6% of injury cases when they suspected abuse in 10%. Experts worry the problem could worsen as the incidence of child abuse increases with the economic crisis. Yahoo!/Time (12/4) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
  • Winter brings seasonal affective disorder
Less sunshine in the winter can trigger symptoms of seasonal affective disorder, which strikes between 4% and 6% of the U.S. population and is more common in women in their 20s to 40s. Genetics may play a role in SAD, and for some, light therapy, psychotherapy or medication can help reduce symptoms. CNN (12/3) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  • Elderly feel younger than they really are
A survey of 516 Germans ages 70 to 104 found they report feeling about 13 years younger than they really are. Among people who said they were active and in good health, the gap between actual and subjective age was even wider. Researchers say the data is important because cultural perceptions of the elderly often don't mirror how the seniors themselves really feel. NYTimes.com (12/3) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  • Researchers question maintenance therapy for hepatitis C
Hepatitis C patients who fail to respond to standard medications peginterferon and ribavirin are often placed on maintenance therapy, but they are unlikely to benefit from the extended treatment, a U.S. study found. The practice, which involves administering smaller doses of peginterferon for an unspecified period, should be halted because it is costly and could be dangerous, researchers said. • Insurer group releases universal health care plan
America's Health Insurance Plans has released its universal health care plan, which seeks to reduce by 30% the growth in U.S. health care expenses and cut costs by more than $500 billion between 2010 and 2014. The plan recommends Congress set a five-year cost goal and establish a public-private advisory group to find ways to lower spending, including changes to the reimbursement system. The plan also would ensure coverage for all Americans, with a refundable, advanceable tax credit to allow low-income people to buy private insurance.
