  • States assemble list of projects ahead of stimulus package
Tennessee officials have identified $850 million in projects as potential candidates for a federal economic stimulus package. The list includes nine road and bridge projects in the southeastern part of the state. Meanwhile, Georgia officials have compiled a list of projects that would cost $3.44 billion. "We wanted to put everything out there that we had," a Georgia Department of Transportation spokesman said. "Obviously, we would be more than appreciative for any money they could give us." • Possibility of federal funding revives rail interest in Texas
Lawmakers and transportation policymakers are discussing the possibility of building high-speed passenger rail service in Texas. The U.S. Department of Transportation this month requested proposals from states and businesses to develop 11 high-speed rail corridors; two of the specified routes run through Texas. Supporters of Texas rail service say the state must move quickly if it hopes to land federal funds because other states already have plans for high-speed rail corridors. • States want to use Obama's stimulus for roads, not rail: President-elect Barack Obama is striving to revolutionize infrastructure through a proposed stimulus that may reach $1 trillion. States, however, seem to have other plans. Missouri, Utah and other states are planning to use the federal funds on highways rather than the environmentally friendly mass transit and rail lines that Obama envisions. Bloomberg (12/24)

  • BMI could help companies gain edge in infrastructure projects
