Broadcasting & Cable, in this editorial, is urging President-elect Barack Obama to appoint an FCC chairman, technology czar and Commerce secretary who are committed to policies that espouses "fairness and openness." In B&C's view, the new administration should not rush to regulate but foster diversity by permitting smaller market TV and radio stations to share resources and to provide open access to government documents previously deemed "classified." - Congress should focus on boosting HD Radio, not Fairness Doctrine
Greater Media Chairman-President-CEO Peter Smyth is calling on Congress not to repeat a past mistake by reinstituting the Fairness Doctrine, which he believes "chilled speech," instead of promoting more diverse points of view. "If Congress is truly concerned about viewpoint variety and balance, it should focus more on supporting emerging technologies such as HD Radio, mobile, and WiFi technologies, and whatever the next generation of telecommunications might be," Smyth writes in his December "Corner Office" column.
