- Military jet stunt raises FAA concern
An incident last year in which a pilot caused panic by buzzing the Santa Monica Pier in California in a Soviet-made military jet calls attention to a larger concern of hazards raised by high-performance military jets used by civilian pilots. - Group says "hangar homes" aid airport security
A group called ThroughTheFence.org is challenging the FAA's position discouraging airports from allowing nearby homeowners to taxi their planes on and off airport property. The group says through-the-fence operators may help boost airport security, and it challenges the FAA's assumptions about noise control. FAA Administrator Randy Babbitt says his agency is seeking input from aviation stakeholder groups regarding the through-the-fence policy. AVweb

A citizen advisory committee recommended Wantage Township, N.J., pass on purchasing the Sussex Airport. The general aviation airport would require $5 million in repairs over five years, according to the airport feasibility study. "What I learned most from this study is that the federal and state governments do not make it appealing whatsoever for a municipality to own an airport," said advisory committee member Greg Williams. - GAO: Incursions rare, but rate is growing
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution looks at the issue of runway incursions, noting that Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport ranks fourth for the number of aircraft or other vehicles entering a runway or taxiway without permission. The Government Accountability Office recorded 957 incursions in fiscal 2008, a tiny percentage of the 50,000 daily flights in the U.S. The total number of near-misses has dropped in recent years, the GAO reports, but the rate of such incidents is growing despite a decline in flight operations.
