Kathryn Doherty, ANA SmartBrief Lead Editor
Over the course of 2007, I have been pleased to deliver you the industry news that matters to your business. Part I of this ANA SmartBrief special year-end report rounds up the most important trends, stories and events of the past year. Part II, which will hit your inbox on Thursday, will provide a glimpse into what's in store for 2008.

This year was one of news on safety: nurses' safety as a result of inadequate staffing levels, violence and bullying, as well as patient safety with regard to drugs, devices and hospital infections. Medical professionals, health industry officials, lawmakers and the public continue to be concerned about the nationwide shortage of nurses and nurse educators, and some groups are launching new recruitment and retention efforts to meet the challenge head-on. In the policy arena, presidential candidates have led a renewed focus on providing health insurance coverage to more Americans.

This year's conferences took ANA members to a policy conference on "Nursing Care in Life, Death and Disaster" and to the National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators conference. Members everywhere celebrated National Nurses Week in May, and ANA marked the occasion with a luncheon on the importance of safe patient handling for congressional health staff. It was an exciting year, indeed.

And now, here's what was most important to YOU in 2007.
