- Coordinating hotel security during inauguration a complex task
Coordinating security at the Marriott Wardman Park in Washington, D.C., during President Barack Obama's inauguration involved working with everyone from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, to the Metropolitan Police Department. Ferrell Cook, the hotel's security director, said he learned from working in Atlanta during the Olympics when an event was bombed and later at the Ritz-Carlton in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina, to be prepared for anything and to never say it will never happen here. Security came in droves to ensure safety during inauguration: Secret Service officials said they were fully prepared for the task of keeping people safe during the presidential inauguration in Washington. Nevertheless, the mobilization was daunting, with 1,000 U.S. Park Police joined by 1,300 members of the National Guard and an additional 11,000 military personnel on hand for any possible scenario, including nuclear, biological and chemical events. - Cyber-security crisis requires immediate attention, expert says
The United States is facing a cyber-security crisis of mammoth proportions and President Barack Obama will be challenged to take measures to protect intellectual property, an expert warns, adding that the U.S. government should examine the market supply chain of IT products by asking questions such as who designed, built, operates, maintains, upgrades and ultimately retires the technology. - Expert: Where IT security is concerned, the devil is in the details
In an interview, IT security expert Bruce Schneier says securing a business is a complex matter that can't rely on quick fixes or shortcuts. "Security is hard: It's not simply a matter of tossing a piece of technology at a problem," he says. "The devil is in the details, and the details are complicated." Additionally, inadvertently establishing a culture of suspicion in the name of security isn't smart business because it is likely to alienate customers, he says. CIO Insight

- New regulation could snare U.S.-bound travelers
Britain's Foreign Office fears that unwary fliers could be turned back at U.S. airports as new regulations recently went into effect. Under the Electronic System for Travel Authorization, citizens of visa-waiver countries, including the U.K., are required to complete an online application 72 hours prior to entering the U.S. According to the U.S. Embassy in London, 99.6% of ESTA applications have been approved so far. Nevertheless, British officials are "concerned that people who may not have heard of ESTA and booked their trip before enforcement of the new rule may be caught out," according a spokesman for the Foreign Office. - Patriot Act makes felons of unruly passengers
Laws intended to prevent terrorists from taking over airliners are increasingly being used to punish rowdy passengers, critics charge. Recent applications of the Patriot Act include a mother who spanked her children and a couple making out during a flight. In both cases, the incidents led to verbal altercations with flight attendants, triggering charges of threatening behavior. Law professor Nathan Sales says such applications were never envisioned when he helped write the Patriot Act. "A woman spanking her child is not as great a threat to aviation as members of al-Qaeda with box cutters," he says. Los Angeles Times
