- Lawmaker reaffirms support for FDA power over new-drug ads
Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif., said he plans in January to reopen discussions on giving the FDA authority to prohibit direct-to-consumer ads for new drugs, which may carry risks that are not yet fully understood. Waxman, who is set to become chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee next year, said the proposal "makes a great deal of sense and can provide FDA an important tool to protect the public health." - FDA questions safety of Acusphere imaging agent
Animal tests indicated that Acusphere's Imagify, a contrast agent for improving echocardiogram images, may be linked to hypertension, lower blood pressure and erratic behavior, the FDA said. Acusphere CEO Sherri Oberg clarified that human trials of the injectable product showed no life-endangering side effects and that the risks are similar to those associated with other imaging compounds. A group of outside experts is scheduled to meet Wednesday to evaluate Imagify's efficacy and safety. Google/The Associated Press

- Study reports brain stem cells could restore hearing
Scientists found stem cells in the brain's lateral ventricle that have qualities akin to hair cells in the inner ear. The brain cells could be transplanted into a patient's ear, where they could change their function and replace impaired cells to bring back hearing, according to the study. The findings also could prove useful in developing treatments for disorders involving the nervous system, researchers said. Telegraph (London)
