- At SUPERCOMM, Seidenberg takes issue with regulating the Web
Verizon Communications CEO Ivan Seidenberg kicked off SUPERCOMM 2009 this morning addressing the FCC's proposed rules for regulating Internet content with a warning that they could have unintended consequences for telecom providers. "If we can't earn a return on the investment we make in broadband our progress will be delayed," Seidenberg said, noting that the proposals would unfairly regulate carriers and content companies in different ways. Also, House Energy and Commerce Ranking Republican Joe Barton called on the FCC to put its net-regulations vote, scheduled for Thursday, on hold. Reuters

The independent telecoms that offer wireless services have failed to earn hefty margins from the business, according to a new study from Telergee Alliance, a consortium of public accounting firms that studied 196 such companies. "Smaller rural carriers aren't necessarily going to jump into the bleeding edge of new data services. They will wait until the market stabilizes, then make a prudent decision," said Telergee partner Bruce Hoehne, who added that as the independent telecoms introduce more advanced technology, their margins would likely rise.
