A look back at SUPERCOMM 2009
Broadband communications providers, carriers and vendors come together in Chicago |
SUPERCOMM 2009 wrapped up Friday at Chicago's McCormick Place after a stellar group of speakers took the keynote stage, including Ivan Seidenberg, chairman and CEO, Verizon Communications; Tom Gerke, executive vice chairman, CenturyLink; Tom Rogers, CEO, TiVo; John Stankey, president and CEO, AT&T Operations; Sue Spradley, president, North America of Nokia Siemens Networks; Patrick Esser, president, Cox Communications; Aneesh Chopra, chief technology officer of the U.S.; Hamid Akhavan, chief operating officer, Deutsche Telekom Group; Hardik Bhatt, chief information officer, City of Chicago; and Richard Cotton, executive vice president and general counsel, NBC Universal. Keynote speeches are available for viewing at www.nextgenweb.org.
"Whether you are a service provider, equipment manufacturer or content producer, the message we have heard at SUPERCOMM ... is consistent: broadband and digitization has changed the way we live, work, learn and play, and telecommunications infrastructure is more important than ever before," said Jan Maciejewski, managing director, SUPERCOMM. "We are very pleased with this year's event as we were able to share knowledge, foster innovation and create an environment where global brands could showcase the products and services that enable broadband life."
During the event, SureWest Communications President and CEO Steve Oldham was named chairman of USTelecom's board of directors. "Today -- in the face of important regulatory and legislative decisions that will have a defining impact on our industry -- our nation's visionary broadband-service providers are uniting through USTelecom to advance policies that promote the infrastructure investment and rapid-paced technological evolution customers rightfully count on," Oldham said after being named to his new post. SUPERCOMM 2010 is scheduled to be held in Chicago, Oct. 26 to 28.

- Seidenberg takes issue with regulating the Web
Verizon Communications CEO Ivan Seidenberg kicked off last week's SUPERCOMM 2009 addressing the FCC's proposed rules for regulating Internet content with a warning that they could have unintended consequences for telecom providers. "If we can't earn a return on the investment we make in broadband our progress will be delayed," Seidenberg said, noting that the proposals would unfairly regulate carriers and content companies in different ways. - AT&T will work closer with fewer vendors, Stankey says
AT&T will forge tighter relationships with vendors, but use fewer of them, AT&T Operations President and CEO John T. Stankey said in his SUPERCOMM 2009 keynote. "You can't collaborate with a hundred different players, it's hard to do," he said. Stankey also pressed government to take a hands-off approach to the telecom industry, saying: "Regulation should understand that there's plenty of competition in the market today." TMCNet.com

- Panel: Customer adoption vital to national broadband policy
The FCC must determine what is holding some U.S. consumers back from choosing broadband, according to a panel of executives at the National Broadband Strategy Conference held at SUPERCOMM, who noted that the issues extend beyond service access since 95% of Americans can subscribe to a high-speed Internet service if they so choose. "For some its economic reasons, for others, lifestyle reasons," said Bob Udell of Consolidated Communications. Telephony Online

- Motorola: Personalization, ubiquity will boost telecoms
Providers of telecom service will gain the most value from content that is offered in such a way that it is personalized and ubiquitous. "There is a real infinite catalogue of content becoming available to consumers with new business models being built to deliver it," said Rob Malnati, Motorola's director of broadband home gateways and software, during the ATIS technology conference at SUPERCOMM. "Next-generation video experiences need to differentiate based on support for a range of business models." Telephony Online

- ISPs: U.S. should be proud of broadband record
Americans get more bang for the buck as far as broadband service, speakers representing telecoms and cable companies asserted at SUPERCOMM 2009. More than 90% of households will have access to some broadband service by year-end, they pointed out. "As a percent of per capita GDP, we spend less in the U.S. on broadband than other developed countries. The value for broadband in this country from an end-user perspective is superior," said John Stankey, the head of AT&T Operations. InternetNews.com
