  • October retail sales mixed
Pent-up demand, unseasonably cold weather and softer year-over-year comparables nudged same-store sales figures up for some retailers in October, typically a slower month. Discount chains including BJ's Wholesale Club and Costco saw same-store sales rise 3.7% and 3% respectively, while midlevel and high-end department stores reported mixed results. With few exceptions, teen retail chains reported declines, including a 15% decrease in same-store sales at Abercrombie. The Wall Street Journal (11/6) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
  • Changes in "shapewear" reflect women's struggles
At $750 million in annual sales, triple its business since 2000, the body-wear market continues to boom, but women's dissatisfaction with the undergarments has prompted some makers to revamp their shapewear. Companies such as Spanx are updating their lines to add lace thongs and more colors. Others, such as Not Your Daughter's Jeans, are creating shapewear inside of their regular clothing for easier removal. The Wall Street Journal (11/5) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
  • Analysts: Retailers, consumers suffer from a disconnect
Too many retailers remain out of touch with customers' changing attitudes, analysts warn. In a time of tighter budgets, consumers are looking for bargains on items they need. Instead, retailers are slashing prices on items they're looking to dump, analysts say. They're also playing it safe with few "must-have" items for consumers. Together, the disconnect could be disastrous for retailers' holiday season, analysts warn. MSNBC (11/3) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
