A Florida couple persuaded to smash the window of their hotel room by a caller claiming there was a gas leak in their room were victims of a recent wave of prank calls to hotels. • High-profile buildings are icons and targets, top official says
Security managers at high-profile buildings, such as skyscrapers or stadiums, should secure them by installing anti-ram perimeter columns and keeping blueprints secure, noted New York City Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly in a report to private-security officials. "The same qualities that make the city's buildings recognized icons of design, culture and commerce also make them continuous targets of terrorism," he wrote. • DHS chief seeks to scale back Real ID requirements
Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano is urging Congress to reverse parts of a 2005 law designed to make it tougher for terrorists to obtain the state IDs needed to board aircraft. Some governors have complained that the Bush-era Real ID program would cost $11 billion to implement, and the Obama administration has introduced a scaled-back proposal known as Pass ID.
