- Nursing program enrollment growth slows
A survey shows nursing programs admitted 2% more students this year than in 2007, the smallest annual increase since 2001. Data also show stagnant growth in enrollment and graduations for masters-level nursing programs. The findings may indicate that nursing schools have reached their enrollment capacity with existing faculties, said Fay Raines, president of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, which conducted the survey. - Iowa nurses get bonuses, but still rank low in salaries
Nurses at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics this week are receiving part of a $600 bonus from a Medicaid reimbursement bill signed into law last spring. However, nurses and state lawmakers say it is not enough to improve Iowa's low ranking for nurse salaries. - Early exposure to health careers may help attract students
North Carolina health experts say a growing shortage of nurses remains a top concern but health care employers also struggle to fill nonclinical jobs because students and laid-off workers don't know they exist. Educators say students as early as kindergarten should begin learning about health care careers, including the idea that girls can by physicians and boys can be nurses. Winston-Salem Journal (N.C.)
