- Healthy cholesterol levels may ward off prostate cancer
U.S. research showed the risk of aggressive prostate cancer may be lower among men with healthy cholesterol levels. One study found that men whose cholesterol was below 200 had less than half the risk of developing high-grade tumors, and a second report found that those with lots of HDL or "good cholesterol" were less likely to get any form of prostate cancer than men with low HDL. - Study links fiber consumption with ovulation difficulties
Women who consume the recommended amount of fiber may ovulate less and have lower levels of estrogen, research indicates. Though high-fiber diets have many health benefits, the study raises the possibility that women trying to become pregnant may have more success if they eat less fiber. Reuters

Merck & Co. completed its $41 billion takeover of Schering-Plough, allowing the companies to begin operating as one entity today. - IVAX, Omnicare settle kickback allegations regarding Risperdal
IVAX Pharmaceuticals and Omnicare agreed to resolve allegations that they solicited kickbacks in exchange for encouraging doctors to prescribe Johnson & Johnson's antipsychotic Risperdal to patients at nursing homes, the Justice Department said. Omnicare, which will pay $98 million, denied wrongdoing despite the settlement. Reuters

- CMS pushes EHRs for quality, e-prescribing reporting
The CMS has announced that starting next year, medical providers may use electronic health records to report data on quality and electronic prescribing measures for some of the government's pay-for-performance initiatives. - Opinion: Patient safety should be addressed in biogenerics measure
Congress should ensure that patient safety and medical efficacy are prioritized in any health reform measure that would allow the use of generic biotech drugs, Dr. David B. Nash of Thomas Jefferson University's Jefferson School of Population Health writes in a letter to the editor. Rather than only debating market exclusivity for biogenerics, lawmakers should also specify rules on testing these drugs and consider requiring postmarket surveillance to avoid "unintended consequences" that compromise patient safety, Nash writes.
