- Experts raise concern over planned cuts for cardiovascular imaging
Cardiovascular imaging experts have expressed concern over the CMS' planned physician payment cuts for several cardiovascular imaging services, including a 36% cut for myocardial perfusion SPECT imaging, as part of the 2010 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule final rule. One expert said that because of the cuts, "private-practice cardiology will cease to exist as viable, and cardiologists will shift to hospitals or integrated systems." The agency will take comments on the final rule until Dec. 29. TheHeart.org

- AMIC says initial results on Mo-99 technology promising
Radiopharmaceutical developer Advanced Medical Isotope said preliminary tests on its proton linear accelerator-based technology showed positive outcomes. - Researchers studying new radioactive tracers
Canadian researchers are studying the element rubidium as a radioactive tracer for heart imaging. They will be testing the tracer in cardiology departments in 10 centers across the country. Another team of researchers will be studying a radioactive form of iodine as an imaging agent for artery-related diseases. The researchers received more than $2 million in funding support from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council. The Ottawa Citizen (Canada)

- U.S. medical isotope bill would impact Canada, expert says
The recent passage of a bill in the U.S. House of Representatives that would allow production of medical isotopes in the country could lead to Canada losing its biggest purchaser and its position as a leader in the field of radioisotope production, said Dr. Christopher O'Brien, head of the Ontario Association of Nuclear Medicine. The group is calling for Canada to maintain its leadership in isotope production and continue to look for alternatives in producing the technetium-99m isotope. Meanwhile, the cancer agency in British Columbia has announced that it has received funding to explore the use of cyclotrons in producing medical isotopes. CBC.ca (Canada)
