  • Mainstreaming "augmented reality"
Blurring the line between the virtual and the real is becoming easier for ordinary Web users, thanks to augmented reality technology. Marketers like Nestlé, Frito-Lay and others are drawing on the skills of specialized ad shops to create campaigns that allow users to integrate their own images and content into videos and online virtual environments. • Is there a future for printed news?
Some investors are betting on a rebound in the newspaper sector, but despite financial gains from cost-cutting measures like layoffs and pay cuts, newspaper publishers are facing competition from digital outlets, an uncertain advertising market and many firms have onerous debt obligations. Fitch Ratings analyst Mike Simonton noted, "It's possible that newspapers are cutting costs to a level that accelerates the departure of their audiences towards other outlets." • Sources: Settlement possible in Skype lawsuit
Lawsuits filed by Skype founders Niklas Zennstrom and Janus Friis over the proposed sale to private equity firms of a $1.9 billion share of the eBay unit reportedly could be resolved out of court this week. The possible settlement calls for Zennstrom and Friis, who sold Skype to eBay four years ago, to gain a large share of the new Skype, and for Index Ventures, a venture capital firm whose partner Michelangelo Volpi was cited in the lawsuits, to likely back out of the sale, per this report. • Are You Willing to Pay for Social Networks?
The ongoing debate on the monetization of social networks continues. But which sites most readily lend themselves to fee-based approaches? In a February 2009 Abrams Research study, nearly one-third of respondents in a sample of social media early adopters selected Facebook as the site for which they would be most willing to pay. LinkedIn was a close second, with 29.7% of the votes, followed by Twitter with 21.8%. • Eliminate pointless chores on the path to stardom
How do stars get to be stars? It's not just talent, says Kris Dunn, but also a willingness to sacrifice some aspects of one's personal life to devote time and energy to a career.
