  Business Leadership
  • Business leaders need to inspire and assure
Business leaders need to inspire their managers, employees and customers with confidence and assurance, says business communications coach Carmine Gallo. Taking a page out of history, leaders can borrow from Winston Churchill's famous line: "We are sure that in the end all will be well." Bloomberg Businessweek (3/19) Email this Story
  • Manager's rudeness affects worker productivity
A boss' verbal abuse and rudeness can affect the productivity of an employee who suffers through it and innocent bystanders as well, according to a recent study. After a verbal attack by a boss, employees are left thinking about the incident itself, which takes their minds off the tasks they are doing. Harvard Business Review (3/2008) Email this Story
  • Talent management is challenging in changing workplace
Changes in the nature of work in the 21st century make it harder to predict what kind of talents employees need to have in the years ahead, making it difficult for a company to know whether to invest in training or new hires. A combination of both is an effective talent-management approach today, says Peter Cappelli, director of the Center for Human Resources at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School. • Foreign students offer partial relief from H-2B visa shortage
Amusement parks and other seasonal businesses on the New Jersey shore are preparing to move employees from back offices to front lines as the H-2B visa crisis endangers the traditional Memorial Day kickoff of the summer tourist season. Foreign students on J-1 visas are offering some relief, but they can work only 90 days -- not long enough to fill positions in the "shoulder season" that extends about a month after Labor Day. "It could be devastating and seriously hurt our shore communities if these workers can't return," said an official with the Ocean City, N.J., Chamber of Commerce. • A worker's disposition affects job performance
A bad attitude can affect an employee's performance and relationships with customers. To improve a worker's attitude, managers should treat the employee with respect, reward high performance, identify realistic ways they can be fulfilled by their jobs and discuss bad performance in private. Look for the results from today's poll in the Editor's Note section of next week's U.S. Chamber SmartBrief.
Yes -- their rudeness distracts from whatever point they were trying to make.
They definitely don't help productivity but they don't ruin it either.
No -- sometimes a little rudeness is exactly what the situation calls for.

  • Destin chamber lobbies against proposed Florida gun ban
The Destin Area Chamber of Commerce is campaigning against a proposed Florida law that would ban guns from vehicles parked on private property. "What we are saying as a chamber is that people and employers should have the right to decide what can and cannot be brought onto their property and what can happen on their property -- not big government," said Shane Moody, chamber president. • Supreme Court turns away AARP vs. EEOC
Federal policy that says employers can reduce health insurance expenses for retired workers who turn 65 and qualify for Medicare will continue to be the rule, the U.S. Supreme Court decided Monday by declining to hear AARP vs. EEOC. The high court differed with a lower-court ruling favoring EEOC, despite AARP's claims that the policy discriminates based on age. Google/Associated Press (3/25) Email this Story
  • ASCE report card gives Florida infrastructure a C
Florida will have to invest $200 billion over the next 20 years to maintain and improve its infrastructure, according to a report card issued last week by the Florida Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers. The state's bridges and wastewater infrastructure received the highest grade, B+, while energy and schools were the lowest-rated categories, each earning a D+. "Our infrastructure is sliding toward failure, and without intervention, the prospect for any real improvement is grim," said Fraser Howe, chairman of the section's Government Relations Committee.
