- Everybody does it: Marketing to camouflage bad results
Executives of companies making a variety of products use marketing as a basic tool of earnings management, says Craig Chapman of the Kellogg School. Past studies suggest firms cut marketing expenditures to boost their earnings report, but Chapman's research finds soup makers double up on their marketing effort at the end of the fiscal year and after periods of poor financial performance, offering discounts that can help them meet targets but that also harm long-term profits. - Freelancers experiment with new model for health benefits

"This is a first in a 100-year-old strategy of labor," she said. "We're trying something new." FastCompany.com

- Web site targets companies with illegal hires
Think your business is too small to attract the attention of Immigration and Customs Enforcement? Maybe so, but businesses of all sizes are getting attention from WeHireAliens.com, a vigilante Web site where tipsters can post suspicions about illegal hires -- with absolutely no proof. "We wanted to put the pressure on to the employer because they are the magnet drawing illegal aliens to invade our country," the site's co-founder says. The Dallas Morning News (free registration)

- Advice: Don't let staff get petty over cultural differences
Wondering how to handle an employee whose religious beliefs mean he or she doesn't participate in Christmas, Easter, Valentine's Day or birthday activities at work? The problem isn't the worker, says workplace coach Marie G. McIntyre, who advises a complaining manager to focus on how well the employee does their job, not these superficial differences. Feeling uneasy about a change in the office culture might be understandable, she acknowledges, but the staff needs leadership and guidance to become more accepting and mature. Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

- Who still is hiring
Not every industry is bleeding jobs because of the recession. Education, health services and accounting are fields in which employment is picking up because unemployed workers are going back to school, aging baby boomers need more health care and tax season prompts the need for more workers.
