- Fitch upgrades outlook on global reinsurers
Fitch Ratings recently revised its outlook on the global reinsurance industry from negative to stable as a result of reinsurers' sound financial performance as well as improvements in the capital markets and the economy. Although raising premiums and shoring up reserves could prove difficult for the industry, the pressures still are "within normal cyclical expectations," the rating agency said. Inflation could ramp up claims costs for reinsurers, analysts say: Reinsurance providers could expect an increase in claims costs if inflation deepens and leads to reserve losses and further price declines, analysts said. The problem is a "real" threat to the industry, as it could spur frequency and severity of claims to rise higher than expected, Insurance Information Institute President Bob Hartwig said. Bloomberg

- Ida spinoff slams Mid-Atlantic Coast
The storm from the remnants of Tropical Storm Ida drenched the Mid-Atlantic Coast, and flooded many coastal and low-lying areas in the region. Strong winds toppled trees and power lines, resulting in outages in several areas. At least four people were killed in Virginia and North Carolina, while three fishermen were reported missing after their boat capsized off of New Jersey's coast. The storm is expected to leave the region by Saturday, forecasters said. ABC News
