- Study: Economy won't affect spending on media platforms
A new study from Amdocs indicates consumers have no intention of spending less on Internet, wireless or video services despite the economy. "Ultimately, what it's really saying is that customers are willing to pay for value," said Amdocs executive Anthony Piniella. "If there's a perceived value, even in difficult times, they're willing to pay for it." Broadcasting & Cable

- Analyst: Euro telecoms have bright outlook
Even as it cut ratings Monday on a few companies, Morgan Stanley said that, as a group, European telecoms remained attractive investments because the credit crunch would help pare competitors as it spurs more mergers and buyouts. The brokerage -- citing its earnings momentum -- upgraded Portugal Telecom and asserted that the stronger telecoms are holding strong cards because lower-tier companies may be forced to sell to them at bargain prices. - Level 3 pares 8% of staff
Network support provider Level 3 Communications said Monday that it would reduce its North American work force 8% by year-end and take a charge of about $12 million to $15 million in its fourth quarter. - Cablevision's Rutledge says DVR deployment still on track
Cablevision, whose network DVR has stirred some controversy because of the way it allows subscribers to store programs, will proceed with plans to roll out the device in 2009 ... as long as it is not deemed illegal by the U.S. Supreme Court, according to Chief Operating Officer Tom Rutledge. "We have plans to begin deploying it some time next year," he said. "It has all the functionality of a DVR, it looks to you like a DVR. You can't really tell the difference." Reuters

- Ciena claim: We transmitted a true 100G wavelength
Ciena has touted an optical breakthrough, claiming it has transmitted the first real 100G single wavelength and insisting that previous 100G had combined or inversely multiplexed lesser signals to reach the milestone.
