- Report identifies 10 online retailing trends
Verdict Consulting has released a report called "Internet Retail Trends 2010: Ten Actions for Your Business," which touches on how the recession is affecting and will likely continue to affect sales. "The recession has certainly caused online shoppers to alter their purchasing habits and online retailers are now also facing a severe slowdown in new customers," said Neil Saunders of Verdict. "Our report suggests that retailers must turn their attention to driving repeat business -- shifting marketing spend away from attracting new customers and instead [focusing] it on adding value for their existing customer base." - Zappos tops ratings for availability of online retailers
Online shoppers were able to access Zappos.com 98.55% of the time in October, according to Gomez. The shoe and apparel retailer topped the company's rankings of online retailer availability for the month. Deloitte found that consumers' purchasing decisions are increasingly influenced by social-media sites. The study found that 17% of consumers plan to shop for gifts using social-media sites. The study also shows that more consumers are planning to use their mobile phones to help in their shopping. A quarter of respondents said they will likely use their mobile phones to make a holiday gift purchase. ClickZ

- Sainsbury's online operation benefits from IT upgrades
Sainsbury's said it has simplified in-store and online processes, helping the retailer's online operations improve. Online sales of groceries have jumped 20%, Sainsbury's said. The company plans to continue to invest in the segment. "Our strategy is now well established and has enabled us to compete successfully through challenging economic conditions. We have continued to grow market share, and extended our reach through online operations. We have also stepped up the expansion of our convenience store network," said Sainsbury's CEO Justin King. - Nikon uses Twitter to launch micro-video campaign
To promote its D5000 model, Nikon recruited such celebrities as Ashton Kutcher to tweet the launch of its online film festival for user-generated content. The actor posted on his Twitter account a link to his own submission on the Web site of the Nikon Film Festival, which will award a $100,000 prize to the best 140-second video documenting a day in the filmmaker's life.
