  • John Glaser comments on EHR studies vs. word-of-mouth testimonials

John Glaser, Ph.D., chairman of the CIO SmartBrief Advisory Board
Our understanding of the value of health care information technology is shaped by rigorous studies. These studies compare the efficiency, safety and quality of care between settings that have and are fully utilizing the technology with settings that rely on paper.

Our understanding of the value also is influenced by less scientific reports and testimonials of organizations that have implemented electronic health records and health information exchanges. These reports may lack scientific rigor, but they are accurate descriptions of value by those at the front line of care.

We need rigorous studies. They provide an important understanding of when and how to apply the technology and the nature of potential gains. But a growing chorus of successful experiences is, in many ways, more powerful than studies. A colleague telling another colleague that, "It was challenging but it was worth it," has an effect that is very real, very salient and very significant.

In the years ahead we can expect an electronic health record momentum that is the result of clinical colleagues talking to each other.

--John Glaser, Ph.D., vice president and CIO at Partners HealthCare System, is serving as chairman of the CIO SmartBrief Advisory Board. His commentary on selected articles will appear each Friday in the CIO SmartBrief. LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  • CIOs: Hospitals should support physician practices in EMR adoption
Helping physician practices with their electronic medical records implementation could give hospitals competitive advantage in terms of their business model and quality of care, said Dr. Todd Rothenhaus, CIO of Boston-based Caritas Christi Health Care. Some hospitals may not be able to fund EMRs for physician practices, but they could create a strategy that can encourage doctors to become involved in health IT adoption, added Lindsey Jarrell, CIO of Tampa, Fla.-based BayCare Health System. Health care organizations are not poised to comply with HITECH's privacy and security rules due to a lack of funds and response plans, according to a Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society survey. Lisa Gallagher, HIMSS' senior director for privacy and security, advised medical groups to "approach all IT activities, including data security, with effective management and efficient use of their budgets, staff and technologies." • Expert: ARRA incentives drive surge in CIO recruitments
Hospitals and integrated delivery systems are scrambling to fill CIO positions with the right talent, "particularly those who have experience with EHR implementations and vendors," said Linda Hodges, vice president and health IT practice leader at Witt/Kieffer. The surge in CIO recruitments is due in large part to the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act incentives, added Hodges. Healthcare IT News (11/4) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
