- Report lists cancer types most affected by obesity
The American Institute for Cancer Research has released a report linking about 100,500 new cancer cases to obesity every year. The report lists breast, endometrial and kidney cancers among the cancer types most strongly linked to extra weight. USA TODAY

- Hospital telephone triage line improves ED efficiency
Midland Memorial Hospital's telephone triage system logged some 4,700 calls in its first three months, and 65% of patients who told the nurse they thought they should go to the emergency department were referred to a clinic or other source of care. Officials at the Texas facility said the triage line has made a significant difference in the acuity levels of patients in the ED and led to faster admissions and "door-to-doctor time." - U.S. data show 32% of deaths occur in hospital
U.S. data showed 32% of all deaths in 2007 occurred in a hospital and the top cause of patient death was septicemia. The U.S. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality report said the average hospital cost for a patient who died was almost three times as much as for patients discharged alive. ABC News/Reuters

- Physicians concerned about HIT cost, workflow disruption
An online survey of 1,001 physicians found 82% of respondents cited cost and 74% cited workflow disruption as the major risks for EHR adoption. The survey, by Ingenix, also showed 58% had little or no familiarity with the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which offers incentives for switching to electronic health records. - Express Scripts members to get benefit info from kiosks
Express Scripts has partnered with Greatwater Software to offer patients information about their prescription drug benefits through kiosks in their physician's office. Patients will be able to find out about their coverage and prescription management options, such as mail delivery of pharmaceuticals, to help improve prescription compliance and boost patients' involvement in their own care. - Trial vaccine targets HPV to stop precancerous lesions
Researchers said an experimental vaccine that targets human papillomavirus successfully stopped precancerous lesions in the vulva from turning into cancer. The study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, showed 60% of patients with vulvar dysplasia showed a response from the vaccine and 25% had their lesions disappear completely. The FDA plans to better prevent errors in dosing and dispensing of pharmaceuticals through the Safe Use program. As part of the program, the agency released guidance on dosage for makers of over-the-counter drugs that come with droppers or other dosing devices. The Washington Post
