News updates for Greater Washington's business leaders
  Top News

  • Flu studies warn that intensive care units could be overwhelmed
Three health studies that look at swine flu experiences in Canada, Mexico, Australia and New Zealand warn that U.S. intensive care units could be overwhelmed through winter as a second wave of swine flu makes some sufferers seriously ill. "There's almost two diseases," says Anand Kumar, lead author of the Canadian study. "Patients are either mildly ill, or critically ill and require aggressive ICU care. There isn't that much of a middle ground." The Wall Street Journal (10/13) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
  Economic Stimulus and Financial Reform
  • Stats show benefits of being the capital city
Greater Washington is somewhat removed from the downturn that still troubles the rest of the U.S., according to this Financial Times report. Unemployment is the lowest of any major metropolitan area, an expected rise in federal discretionary spending will channel much of the money into the local economy, the federal government has added 16,000 jobs, regional contractors are picking up additional work and more stimulus money has been given per capita to the region than any other area. • Sunrise to sell 21 assisted-living facilities
Sunrise Senior Living, based in McLean, Va., announced Friday it will sell 21 assisted-living facilities to Brookdale Senior Living of Nashville to pay down debt. • Volkswagen's Herndon headquarters is hub for new marketing push
"Max," the smart-mouthed Beetle featured in Volkswagen television ads, may be exiting its sixth floor perch in the company's U.S. headquarters in Herndon, Va., as marketing efforts turn from trendy buyers to people more interested in cup holders and entertainment systems. A change in direction for the German automaker actually began last year, when it decided to move Volkswagen Group of America headquarters from Detroit to the Washington, D.C., area.   Going Green
  • Gubernatorial candidates are asked to focus on green industry
Business leaders say Virginia's next governor needs to take a regional approach to green jobs to make Greater Washington more competitive with other areas of the country. GWBOT President and CEO Jim Dinegar points to AES in Arlington, Va., BP Solar International in Frederick, Md., and the U.S. Green Building Council in Washington as the kinds of businesses the area can get. "To attract businesses here, the more we can make this region a green competitive advantage, the more of a benefit we will see," says Dinegar. American City Business Journals/Washington, D.C. • Proposed N.M. power station could open grid to renewable sources
The proposed Tres Amigas power superstation in New Mexico would connect Eastern, Western and Texas electricity grids, potentially speeding up development of renewable energy. Federal energy officials find the notion interesting because development of solar and wind power has been limited by the absence of an infrastructure to connect remote energy sources to the wider market.
