AT&T to sell DSL through Wal-Mart

AT&T Inc. will begin promoting its DSL service on Wednesday in 570 Wal-Mart Stores across 13 states where the telecom operates. Initially, the program will tell potential customers how to sign up for DSL and by February in-store staff will sell the service.   USA TODAY (11/29)

EU approves sale of AOL German access business

European Union regulators cleared the way Tuesday for Telecom Italia to acquire AOL's German access unit for $856 million in cash. With the deal, Telecom Italia will become Germany's No. 2 broadband provider, but "the combined firm would continue to face a number of strong, effective competitors, notably the incumbent Deutsche Telekom," the European Commission said.   The New York Times/Associated Press (11/28)

Maryland counties OK Verizon's FiOS TV

Councils in Montgomery and Prince George's counties approved agreements Tuesday permitting Verizon Communications to sell its FiOS TV service. Under the terms of the 15-year agreement, Verizon plans to roll out its video service to most of Montgomery within four years and to all of Prince George's within nine years.   The Washington Post (11/29)

3Com to acquire Huawei's stake in joint venture

3Com Corp. will acquire Huawei Technologies Co.'s 49% stake in Huawei-3Com Ltd. for $882 million. The joint China-based venture was formed in 2003, and it designs, manufactures and sells networking equipment.   The Wall Street Journal (11/29)

Ericsson to acquire Entrisphere for $290 million, reports say

Ericsson will buy broadband access equipment maker Entrisphere to help it win a deal to supply broadband network equipment to AT&T Inc., says market research firm Ovum/RHK, citing a report in a Swedish technology newspaper. Ericsson would not confirm the reports, and Entrisphere did not comment by press time.   Network World (11/28)

TeliaSonera sees fixed-line telephony fading

Swedish telecom TeliaSonera believes traditional fixed-line telephony will disappear within 10 years, its CEO said at a conference. The company sees growth in four areas: mobile telephony and data services; fixed-line broadband services; enterprise services; and adding more subscribers in Eastern Europe and Asia.   The Wall Street Journal/Dow Jones Newswires (11/28)

Motorola launches low-cost phone in India

Motorola on Tuesday launched the Motofone, which is priced under $40. Comcast pitches wireless service

Comcast is advertising its wireless service in the Boston area after it launched the service earlier this month there and in Portland, Ore. Comcast is using Sprint Nextel Corp.'s network and, like other cable companies, believes adding wireless to its triple-play bundle will help it compete against telecoms, which are launching video services.   The Washington Post/Reuters (11/28)

BSNL, Intel to offer WiMAX services in India

BSNL reportedly will team up with Intel to deploy India's first wireless broadband and telecom service on WiMAX. The technology, which is almost 30 times faster than 3G, is undergoing more than 200 trials worldwide and has been deployed at 40 locations commercially.   The Financial Express (India) (11/28)

Report: WiMAX unlikely to challenge 3G in Asia-Pacific this decade

Alcatel broadcasts mobile TV using S-band

Alcatel said Tuesday that it successfully demonstrated Europe's first broadcast of live TV channels on handsets in S-band.
