Over the course of 2008, I have been pleased to deliver you the news that matters to your industry. Part I of this AH&LA SmartBrief special year-end report rounds up the most important trends, stories and events of the past year. Part II, which will hit your inbox Thursday, will provide a glimpse into what's in store for 2009.

There were several legislative issues in Congress and the elections that affected the hotel and lodging industry in 2008, including card-check action in key Senate races, President George W. Bush's signature on a law further defining the Americans with Disabilities Act, and Travel Promotion Act passage in the House of Representatives. Trends that dominated the industry ranged from in-room technology and green construction to larger-than-life resorts and global expansion.

This year's conferences and meetings took AH&LA members to Washington, D.C., for the AH&LA Legislative Action Summit, to Oklahoma City for the AH&LA Summer Summit, and to New York for the AH&LA Fall Conference, held in conjunction with the International Hotel/Motel & Restaurant Show.

It's been a busy and exciting year!

And now, here's what was most important to YOU in 2008.
