It's hard to pin down the biggest story in the world of advertising and marketing this year. The credit crunch and economic downturn prompted a wave of belt tightening among marketers and agencies. At the same time, a robust and energetic political season provided record election takes for broadcast and online media. Social networking took hold as a seemingly unstoppable force in media, and the mainstreaming of online everything continued unabated.

This AAF SmartBrief special year-end report wraps up a busy year in the interactive media and advertising space. Part I highlights the most important trends, stories and events of 2008. Part II, which will hit your inbox Thursday, will provide a glimpse into what's in store for 2009.

Here's what was most important to you in 2008, as voted on by the clicks of AAF SmartBrief readers.
