- Some community pools haven't complied with safety act
Some community pools have yet to comply with a federal law that requires updated drain covers for safety. In Effingham, Ill., for example, new covers will be installed at Kluthe Memorial Pool in the next few weeks, officials say. In Lynden, Wash., city officials recently shut down a YMCA hot tub that was in violation of the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act. It would have cost up to $7,000 to install the new covers and bring the hot tub into compliance with other codes, a city official said. Effingham Daily News (Ill.)

A 6-foot alligator took a swim in Bob and Pat Nappi's backyard pool in Florida. Bob Nappi called trappers to remove the beast; he said he thinks the alligator pushed in one of the screens surrounding the pool to enter. "We see gators all the time. We just didn't think we'd see them in our backyard pool," Pat Nappi said. Bradenton Herald (Fla.)

- Preparing for crisis might save some family-owned businesses
The prolonged economic downturn has forced many family-owned businesses to close their doors, experts say. They note that many small businesses have remained in the same family for decades and do not have formal plans in place to adjust to economic downturns. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that 4.3 million businesses with 19 or fewer employees closed during the period from the fourth quarter of 2007 through the fourth quarter of 2008. - Using services to build customer relationships
It is easier for a company to build on existing customer relationships than to attract clients, argues Larry Crosby. Creating services tied to a product is a great way to expand a business relationship, he suggests. Crosby points to Xerox as a firm that used its product line to launch a service operation that helped revitalize the company. Knowledge@W.P. Carey

- Consumer shows offer marketing opportunities
Home-improvement and landscaping businesses often participate in consumer shows to market their businesses. In Oklahoma, for example, a variety of small businesses were expected to attend the Bricktown Home & Garden Festival recently. Companies were to display outdoor fireplaces and kitchens, pool landscaping ideas and water features. The Oklahoman (Oklahoma City)

- Column: Expansion joints may solve buckling problems
Hot days and cool nights may cause patio pavers to expand and contract and eventually buckle, writes general contractor Robert Lamoureux in response to a question from a reader. He writes that expansion joints running between tiles can prevent such problems with patios and swimming pools. Lamoureux notes that DecoSeal will help a pool cope with expansion and help the pool and deck absorb the movement. The Signal (Santa Clarita Valley, Calif.)
