- Vodafone, Telefonica complete four-nation share deal
In what is being called the largest multicountry deal of its kind, Vodafone and Telefonica will share their mobile infrastructure in four European countries in an effort to save "hundreds of millions of pounds," improve coverage and meet rising demand for wireless-broadband services. The deal calls for the companies to share network masts in Germany and Ireland, extend a site-share arrangement in Spain and develop more joint sites in the U.K. Reuters

- AT&T gains FEMA pact for wireless service
FEMA has chosen AT&T Mobility as its main carrier to deliver wireless voice and data services under a one-year, $50 million contract in which AT&T will provide the government's emergency-response agency with BlackBerry phones and wireless laptop devices, AT&T said. NewsOxy.com

- Toshiba puts off introduction of fuel cell phone chargers
Toshiba has put off the release of its new, cleaner fuel cell battery chargers -- portable devices that do not need to be plugged into the wall -- from March to later this year, the company said, citing delays in obtaining parts. - More signs point to Apple's readying new iPhone
Apple continues to show strong hints that it will soon release a new iPhone handset as two more carriers -- the U.K.'s O2 and Canada's Rogers Wireless -- are offering aggressive incentives on the iPhone 3G, according to Internet reports. O2 said that it would give away the iPhone 3G with a two-year plan and purchase of a minimum data package while Rogers' Fido service is reportedly preparing to clear out its stock of 16GB iPhones with no plans to restock its current inventory. - FCC OKs LG device for LTE
The FCC has offered momentum to the next generation of mobile-broadband devices in approving an LG Electronics-powered product of which little is known except that it uses the wireless Long-Term Evolution standard and is not a phone, according to reports. Referred to as "LTE User equipment," the device will transmit in the 1,700-MHz band and receive in the 2,100-MHz band. InformationWeek

- Accenture survey: Mobile multimedia applications make gains
Consumer acceptance of mobile phones as a source of entertainment via multimedia services is on the rise, Accenture reported. The December study said 79% of subscribers limit their cell phone use to phone calls, text messaging and e-mail, but the survey found more adoption of new features than the previous year, especially among baby boomers. - Homeless find cell phones no longer a luxury
Cell phones have become such an integral part of society that 30% to 45% of Washington's homeless population own them, according to advocates who say the devices represent a "lifeline" for those who live on the streets. "A cell phone is the only way you can call to keep up with your food stamps, your housing application, your job. When you're living in a shelter or sleeping on the streets, it's your last line of communication with the world," said one former homeless person. The Washington Post

- Euros consider mobile rate cuts, number-porting rules
The European Parliament is expected to give preliminary approval this week to a range of cuts on mobile rates, including putting caps on fees for text messaging and Internet surfing while roaming. Also, Viviane Reding, the European Union's telecoms commissioner, this morning urged lawmakers to be aggressive in setting new telecom rules, especially in limiting the time it takes to switch subscribers' phone numbers when they change carriers.
