- Nokia moves closer to open-source platform
Nokia has taken a critical step toward creating an open-source wireless environment, terming the closing of its deal to Symbian a "fundamental step" in creating the Symbian Foundation, a cross-industry collaboration that will use Symbian's open software to rival Google's Android and the LiMo Foundation's own Linux operating systems. "In the longer perspective, Linux will become a serious alternative for our high-end phones," said Nokia Vice President Ukko Lappalainen. Nokia also disclosed that it will upgrade its mobile-mapping applications based on technology from its $8.1 billion acquisition of Navteq. Reuters

- LG hopes to improve global market share
LG Electronics will focus on improving its market share in the global wireless industry next year, saying that it expects only modest growth on handset sales because of the worldwide economic recession. An LG executive said the fifth-largest maker of mobile devices would try to raise its global share from 8% to 10%. Reuters

- Canada's Sierra Wireless tops Gemalto's Wavecom bid
Sierra Wireless, a maker of wireless modems, moved Tuesday to rescue French mobile-technology firm Wavecom from a hostile takeover from Gemalto, a Dutch maker of smartcards, a development that would enable Sierra to enter the growing machine-to-machine, or M2M, communications arena. The Canadian vendor agreed to pay a 21% premium to Wavecom's shares -- an estimated $275 million -- in topping Gemalto's bid for the company. Reuters

- MySpace will stream video to select phones
The online social network MySpace looked toward the nascent but much-hyped stream of mobile ad revenue with the announcement today that members will be able to stream video from its Web site to selected handsets. In becoming the first online social-network community to offer mobile video streaming, MySpace will not sell ads at launch, saying the video streaming will also engage its members. - Motorola gives newest Rokr phone a surround-sound twist
The latest Rokr-branded phone from Motorola will include what the company describes as virtual surround-sound, along with such other enhanced audio features as dual stereo speakers and a pair of embedded media players. Motorola, which said it would ship the Motorokr EM35 this quarter, but did not disclose a price, said the surround-sound technology would enable listeners to feel as though the music were coming from all over their head instead of just through the ears. - AT&T head asks Obama to offer investment incentives
The incoming Obama administration needs to move quickly to encourage companies to invest in the country's technology infrastructure, AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson said Tuesday, noting that AT&T's backing had helped launch and build Google, Amazon and eBay. In a speech at a Fortune 500 forum, Stephenson said the investments would add a jolt to the ailing economy and also pointed to the cost-savings AT&T reaped from its own twist on offering health care benefits in urging Obama to explore alternative national health care programs.
