- Study: Meditation may reduce ADHD symptoms
A small group of middle-school students who practiced transcendental meditation twice daily at school reduced their stress and anxiety by 50% and improved ADHD symptoms as well, according to a new study published in Current Issues in Education. The changes after three months were much more dramatic than researchers expected, including better attention, memory, organizational and behavioral skills, said lead researcher Sarina J. Grosswald. - Do gay high schools protect students or segregate them?
The country's two gay-friendly public high schools are safe havens, say gay and lesbian students who have transferred to such campuses after harassment at traditional high schools. While some are concerned the New York and Milwaukee schools segregate LGBT students without addressing the bullying itself, some educators say the schools act as a stopgap to prevent harassed students from dropping out or developing mental-health problems. - Obituary: Maryland superintendent of the year dies suddenly
Superintendent Jacqueline C. Haas, 59, who led the Harford County, Md., schools for a decade and was named the 2008 Maryland superintendent of the year, died Tuesday after a severe asthma attack. State superintendent Nancy S. Grasmick said Haas, a former special-educator, is the first active Maryland superintendent to die in some 20 years. "You will not find anybody in our educational system that cared more about children than her," said Patrick Hess, president of the Harford school board. "She based every decision on that." - Hospital music studio helps youngsters cope with cancer
Pediatric cancer patients at Texas Children's Hospital in Houston can take a break from the stress of their disease and treatments by creating their own music at a special studio in the hospital. Some of the songs recorded through the Purple Songs Can Fly program have been featured on audio tracks aboard Continental Airlines flights and have been carried into space aboard the space shuttle. - ADHD diagnoses tied to mother's use of health care system
Mothers of children with ADHD are more likely to make more extensive use of health services than those whose children are not diagnosed with the disorder, according to a study that used a decade's worth of data from a California health insurance provider. Mothers of children with ADHD were especially likely to be diagnosed with depression, obesity or anxiety around the time of their pregnancy and their child's infancy. Medscape (free registration)

- Obama recovery plan to include school renovations
U.S. schools need an estimated $255 billion in repairs, according to the American Federation of Teachers. President-elect Barack Obama hopes to include school renovations in his economic-stimulus plan, although he has not yet disclosed the total that he wants to dedicate to schools.
