- Analysts: Milk prices should moderate, possibly decline
Rising milk prices have been tough on food companies that have been challenged on numerous fronts this year, but analysts say relief might be in sight. "Supply and demand are starting to get more back into balance," said Deborah Perkins, Rabobank's managing director for food and agribusiness research. - Chr Hansen to supply ingredients package to improve whey drinks
Chr Hansen will launch My Whey, an ingredients package for manufacturers of whey-based drinks that will first enter the market in Germany. - McDonald's to assist franchisees with beverage initiative costs
McDonald's has announced that it will pay up to 40% of the expensive renovations needed for the launch of its specialty coffee program, which also includes a foray into smoothies and other high-end beverages. "McDonald's has offered us several contribution options that we can choose to most effectively implement [the beverage initiative] in our restaurants," said Don Armstrong, head of McDonald's franchisee association. - Researchers: Whole milk foods help guard against infertility
A team of doctors and researchers has come out with a number of dietary recommendations, called The Fertility Diet, designed to help women prevent and reverse ovulatory infertility. One of their findings is that "a daily serving or two of whole milk and foods made from whole milk-full-fat yogurt, cottage cheese, and, yes, even ice cream-seem to offer some protection against ovulatory infertility, while skim and low-fat milk do the opposite." - Products with "friendly" bacteria are safe, experts say
Probiotics, or "good" bacteria akin to those in the human digestive system, which can be found in products such as supplement pills, yogurts and cereals, are generally safe and can boost health in some cases, researchers say. Also beneficial are prebiotics, which have fiber and other nutrients that feed probiotic bacteria. More than 150 probiotic and prebiotic commercial food products are now available in the market, displaying significant growth in the sector, according to a market-research firm. - China launches children's nutrition and food-safety drive
In response to public health scares such as fake milk powder, China has implemented a campaign to increase food safety and promote nutrition among children. The campaign, which begins this month, targets small businesses in rural areas, where dietary knowledge is scant, and processed foods are typically mislabeled or made with substandard ingredients, according to state media.
