Advantage Rent-A-Car cited a drop in travel demand as it filed for bankruptcy protection. • Travel buyers hope Southwest's presence in NYC will push down fares
Corporate travel buyers' hopes have been raised that Southwest Airlines' likely debut at LaGuardia Airport will drive down fares in the New York City market. Southwest intends to purchase 14 slots at the airport through a multimillion-dollar acquisition of ATA Airlines, a former code-share partner. Coined by the Transportation Department in a report 15 years ago, the "Southwest Effect" describes the stimulation of demand and decline in fares that generally happens after the discount airline enters a market. • Airlines seek to differentiate coach-class experience
The introduction of a la carte pricing has given airlines the chance to address a persistent problem: how to differentiate between full-fare and sale-fare customers seated side-by-side in coach class. Though fliers with expensive tickets can't always snag a first-class seat, airlines can now waive a host of fees to help differentiate the travel experience. From reservations to boarding to onboard service, American Airlines VP Dan Garton says his company is trying to make travel easier for high-revenue customers. • Miami has changed a lot since Don Johnson's heyday
Miami still features expansive sandy beaches, plenty of sunshine and a touch of the exotic, but the holiday hot spot has evolved beyond simply a resort town with a dark side. During the mid-1980s "Miami Vice" era, the city's hedonism included cocaine and with that came gangland shootings and carjackings. A decade later, the city had generally cleansed itself of most of its cocaine cowboys and cutting-edge hoteliers introduced upscale boutique hotels. CNN (12/4) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
