- Report: Better health system needed for teenagers
The health care system for teenagers is fragmented and poorly designed, with few medical providers specializing in the comprehensive care needed for this age group, a report from the National Research Council and Institute of Medicine says. Teenagers may fall through the cracks in the U.S. health care system at a time when they begin adopting some of the riskiest behaviors and setting habits that will impact their health in adulthood, experts warn. - More Americans living with multiple chronic medical conditions
The latest U.S. health data show 44% of Americans had at least one chronic medical condition in 2005, up from 41% in 1996. The percentage of those with three or more chronic conditions jumped from 13% to 22% for people ages 45 to 64 and up to 45% for those 65 to 79 during that time period. Increases in obesity and sedentary lifestyles may have led to more people developing two major chronic conditions -- diabetes and high blood pressure. Reuters

- Few overweight patients get diagnosis from providers
A study analyzing medical records for more than 60,000 children found only 10% of those who were overweight got that diagnosis from their health care provider. Researchers say weight-related diagnoses were given to 54% of obese patients and 76% of the severely obese. They say providers are missing an opportunity to counsel overweight patients before they become obese. The New York Times

- Study: Diet can prolong life in breast cancer patients
A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and low-fat dairy can help women with early-stage breast cancer live longer, a new study suggests. Researchers found that women who ate the "prudent" diet had a lower overall death rate during the eight-year study. Reuters

- Group warns against combining impotence drugs, other medicines
Public Citizen named 56 common products that it said could cause health risks such as heart attack or stroke when taken with Pfizer's Viagra, Eli Lilly and Co.'s Cialis and other drugs for erectile dysfunction. The consumer group's list includes hypertension treatments and herbal medicines. Viagra's label "accurately and responsibly reflects" its safety profile, a Pfizer spokeswoman said. Bloomberg

AANP members interested in running for office must have their nominations submitted to AANP by Friday, January 9. Information and the 2009 nomination form can be found here. AANP board of director positions up for election are president-elect, treasurer and regional directors for Regions 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 and 11. State representative positions open are Alaska, Arkansas, Colorado, Idaho, Kentucky, Louisiana, Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York (N), New York (S), N. Carolina, N. Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, S. Carolina, S. Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Washington and Wyoming. There are three open positions for the Nominations Committee.

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality has developed a new page on the AHRQ Health Care Innovations Exchange Web site, Linking Clinical Practices and the Community for Health Promotion. The new page is designed to find new ways to work together to support patients in adopting healthy behaviors and managing their health, to create new ways to connect patients with services in primary care offices and community settings, and to increase accessibility to these services. Visitors to the new page can find profiles of innovations that have successfully integrated clinical, public health and community health services. Also available are tools to assist in developing partnerships and referral linkages. Visitors are invited to share their experiences and lessons learned through a commenting feature that is provided from each innovation profile page.
