- Hospitals try to make IT useful for nurses
Some hospitals are working to make health IT more usable for nurses so they can spend more time with patients. One hospital in Iowa has established a nursing collaborative group to facilitate communication between IT staff and nurses. - Doctors group sees HIT role in improving health care system
The American College of Physicians analyzed health care in 12 industrialized countries and the U.S. and says the U.S. could either implement a pluralistic system or a single-payor system to achieve health care for all Americans. - SureScripts: E-prescribing to nearly triple in 2008
A new SureScripts report estimates its network will process 100 million prescription and refill requests next year, nearly triple the 35 million requests in 2007. However, the report also noted only 6% of U.S. physicians use e-prescribing, and only 2% of prescriptions and renewals are electronically prescribed. Health Data Management

Royal Philips Electronics has acquired patient-monitoring-software maker Emergin for an undisclosed amount. - Panel: FDA needs more science resources, IT boost
The FDA must get more money, hire more scientists and boost its science infrastructure to keep pace with scientific advances and avoid putting American lives at risk, an FDA advisory panel said at a public meeting Monday. The panel, which presented its findings to FDA Commissioner Dr. Andrew von Eschenbach, also said the agency's IT infrastructure was the "weakest but most critical link." Reuters
