It's been an eventful year for radio and TV broadcasters. Presidential politics brought in hundreds of millions of dollars to local stations, and provided an incredible news storyline that captivated audiences from coast to coast.
Programmers faced up to the challenge of new technologies, rolling out content to HD Radio listeners, mobile video watchers and online channel surfers
It was a year of battling for the NAB, from challenging regulators to block the merger-to-monopoly between the two struggling satellite radio companies to helping to ensure that local TV broadcasters are fairly compensated for carriage on pay TV systems. Meanwhile, NAB successfully held off an RIAA-backed "performance tax" on local radio stations in Congress, while presenting a strong case in its opposition for new "localism mandates" at the FCC.
The power of the Federal Communications Commission to regulate the content of over-the-air broadcasting was called into question in a decision by the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New York that nullified the agency's policy regarding so-called fleeting expletives. The case is now before the U.S. Supreme Court.
