- Several NYC schools to be closed for poor grades
Schools Chancellor Joel I. Klein said New York City at the end of this school year intends to close more than a dozen of the roughly 150 schools that received D's and F's on new school report cards, and named six of those slated to be shuttered. The schools being closed "have demonstrated a level of profound failure, and haven't demonstrated potential to turn around," a department official said. NYTimes.com

High-tech "bully buttons" are being installed in some Australian schools so students can alert educators and trigger video cameras to record such incidents. "If students are confronted with footage then there can be very little denial, but it also gives us a clearer perspective of what happened because kids often remember their part but don't have an overall perspective," said Thomas Carr College deputy principal Vera Treloar. Five of Japan's bestselling books for 2007 are "mobile novels," books that are designed for users to download onto cell phones. - North Carolina district examines cap on ELL students
Wake County, N.C., school administrators have asked the school board, which is developing an ELL student assignment policy, for additional time to decide where to set the cap on the number of ELL students per school. At the administrators' request, the board approved a revised policy dropping new language that would have proposed a 15% limit on the number of ELL students at each school. Some school board members say capping each building's ELL enrollment would increase diversity and allow each school a better chance to pass standardized tests, while a dissenting board member said the redistribution would lessen the community-based nature of each school. An estimated 17,000 additional low-income New Jersey children could be eligible for preschool within six years, under the governor's new education proposal, but critics are questioning how the state can afford the $320 million price tag and whether local districts have the classroom space to accommodate such an influx.
