- Microsoft to cut time period for search records, if rivals follow suit
Microsoft, in response to a request from a European Commission advisory panel on privacy, has pledged to cut the time it holds search engine records from up to 18 months to six months, under the condition that rivals Google and Yahoo! adopt similar practices. Google in 2008 has reduced its record-keeping window from 18 months to nine months, while Yahoo! last year cut its period to 13 months, according to this article. ChannelWeb Network

- AOL relaunches social network Bebo
AOL is looking to social network Bebo, which it acquired in March, as a means to reposition AOL as a top performer in the Web content and social-networking spaces. The Bebo strategy hopes to leverage the estimated 124 million users of AOL's instant messenger client and of Bebo itself, and is focused around the "Social Inbox," which aggregates access to content from around the Web, including e-mail from Yahoo! and Google as well as feeds from Twitter and video from YouTube. - Wikipedia succeeds with appeal to end British ban on site
Access to Wikipedia by its user-editors in Britain has been restored after the country's Internet watchdog lifted a temporary hold on the site over a complaint that an image of a young girl on the cover of a 32-year-old Scorpions album may have constituted child pornography. The British censor reversed its decision to deny access to the page, dedicated to The Scorpions' album "Virgin Killer," after Wikipedia appealed. The Guardian (London)
